In the case of RTFL, one way to address both concerns centers on the hydraulic system, the functional heart of the machine itself. A long-time global supplier to the mobile equipment industry, Parker Hannifin has developed a simple, yet effective solution called Constant Pressure Unloaded (CPU). Originally developed for the European market, it is also being applied in North America.CPU incorporates slight modifications made to a standard open center valve. In a standard closed center system, a piston pump or unloaded gear pump will sit at compensated pressure with functions in the neutral position. This results in a horsepower drain that is both taxing to the engine and expensive in terms of fuel consumption. Open center systems also suffer from this horsepower drain due to full flow at system pressure drops. Pressure drops as high as the system relief setting can be seen in some RTFL applications. This is not unusual in that hose lengths to and from the functions can be very long and counterbalance valves are often selected because of cost rather than flow capacity. CPU systems are unique to Parker and provide a simple solution that reduces interference between functions without the need for individual compensators or load sense shuttles. Spools are tailored to provide the maximum required flow for the function at the pump compensator pressure and can be flow compensated to reduce interference.Outriggers, steering and brake manifolds can be put in parallel with the main valve where signal shuttles send the highest load signal to the pump. As with a typical load sensing system, the pump will seek an intermediate pressure position. But if lift or telescoping functions are activated, the signal line is blocked and the pump goes to its compensated setting. The standard Cat 3024 engine used on the PB50 lift truck is a naturally aspirated model rated 52 hp. A turbocharged version rated 62 hp is available as an option on the PB50 and is the standard engine on the PB65. The engine package on both machines incorporates an SRF America heavy-duty frame-mounted radiator and Donaldson dual-element air cleaner. A cyclonic precleaner is also available as an option, the company said.The engine drives a Bosch Rexroth AA10VG hydraulic pump that power the hydrostatic drive. Bosch Rexroth gear pumps are used to power the lift and auxiliary systems. The hydrostatic drive pump incorporates an ant-stall system designed to prevent engine stalling because of overload. "The anti-stall feature reduces drive pump output when engine output cannot meet the demand," Pohl explained. "This prevents the engine from bogging down and stalling. Because the feature is fully automatic, it allows the operator to concentrate fully on driving the machine in rough terrain."
