The CPU system features a signal line from the pump load sense controller through the power core of the valve stack to tank that is drained until a function is activated (a spool is moved). When a lift, telescoping, tilt or auxiliary spool is moved, the signal line is blocked, the pressure builds and the pump goes to its compensated setting. This signal channel is supplied with oil though a 0.035 in. orifice which connects the power core to the open center passage.Individual spools meter the required flow and pressure to the function. The pump delivers the required flow at the pump compensator pressure setting. The pump is at standby (unloaded at approximately 350 psi) when all functions are in neutral. The CPU system makes it easier to start the engine and prevents "ghost" movements when the functions are in neutral. "The Cat engine, combined with the new anti-stall hydraulic drive system, gives the PB50 and PB65 increased performance and makes it easier for the new operator to drive like a pro in rough terrain."Both of the Piggy Back machines are highly maneuverable--turning radius is 78 in. and gradability is 50 percent--and can reach speeds of 8 mph. Braking is dynamic and to hold the machine when parked, the front wheels are also equipped with Poclain brakes.The PB50 offers a standard lift height of 86 in. with optional lift heights as high as 165 in. available. Dimensions of the 5890 lb. machine are 96 in. high, 100 in. wide and 136 in. long. The PB65 weighs 7000 lb., and shares the same height and width dimensions, but is 5 in. longer than the smaller machine. Both have a ground clearance of 15 in. CPU systems are extremely stable and can be very energy efficient depending on duty cycle especially when combined with parallel LS circuits. Here, the duty cycle of a telehandler makes this very attractive. They feature a simple low-cost open center main valve converted to closed center with tailored spools and offer very good metering to minimize interference when multifunctioning.In the accompanying example, two separate valves art" used to control the functions. A 40 gpm valve is used for the boom up/down and retract/extend. A smaller 20 gpm valve is selected for tilt, frame level, left/right outriggers and auxiliary. An integrated circuit is affixed to the lower flow valve that provides load sense for the brakes, priority steering and pilot pressure. When the lift or telescopic function is activated the orifice is closed off and the pump goes to compensator pressure. It is also true for the tilt, frame level, outriggers and auxiliary functions. This is accomplished by sending the load sense signal through open center core of the 40 gpm valve on to the 20 gpm valve via power beyond. Since the pump in this example supplies only the flow requested any combination of valves is possible.
